Brief history
The Department of Physiology was founded in 1945 by university professor A. Zubkov, Scientist Emeritus of the MSSR, a descendant of illustrious professor M. Shaternikov - Ivan Sechenov’s disciple. He asserted himself as a scientist by conducting multilateral research ranging from pancreatic secretion to the reticular formation role in nervous activity. A. Zubkov possessed great teacher qualities and oratory skills. From 1946 to 1951, the department was headed by Associate Professor E. Kucinski. Between 1951-1967, its founder, Professor A. Zubkov, returned to the helm of the Department. During 1967-1988, the leadership was ensured by Professor O. Sherstniov. This period was marked by the consolidation of the technical-material base and the development of the methodology of the study process and scientific research. At the same time, the name of the Department was changed to Normal Physiology. In 1966, a Biophysics course was introduced at the Department. It was successively taught by A. Zubkov, A. Saulea, A. Babin, I. Chiaburu. One of the important achievements of the Department was the publishing of a physiology textbook (1966, 1972), which was later translated (1991) into Romanian by the Department's specialists, A. Zubkov being among its authors.
In 1988, A. Saulea, university professor, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences, Scientist Emeritus of the Republic of Moldova, became the head of the Department. The didactic and scientific field has been expanded, including clinical disciplines. The name of the Department was also changed to Physiology and Medical Rehabilitation. The didactic process and scientific research at the department have seen continuous development and modernization: the didactic and scientific equipment has been renewed, elements of virtual physiology have been introduced, and a series of scientific monographs, textbooks and compendiums for students have been published.
In 2009, the Department has been reorganized under the current name of Human Physiology and Biophysics, Victor Vovc, university professor, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, being elected as its head. During this period, the Department's headquarters has been renovated, its technical-material base has been further consolidated - study rooms have been equipped with visual means (LCD TV) and computers, a study method based on problem analysis (clinical case) has been introduced, and the package of virtual physiology teaching programs has been extended.
